Treasure from the Deep by juliedillon Treasure from the Deep by juliedillon
I didn't realize how long it'd been since I finished a new personal piece! I'm hoping to get a few more finished up soon. I have so many rough drafts but I never get the chance to finish them. X)

It might not be a good idea to take that treasure, Mr. Fisherman. Mermaids can be tricksy.

Edit: I had a few comments about the color, but after trying out an updated version with darker/greener water, it just wasn't working for me, so I switched it back to the original version with a few minor updates. Sorry to keep swapping files back and forth! :)

I'm amazed ;-) I haven't seen your updated version, but I kinda like the light glow of the water, it makes perfect sense given the abundant treasure they seem to have kept underneath. The expression on the fishermans face is priceless. ^^ I also very much like the very long and strong looking tails of the mermaids, they give them an aura of strength and primordial-ness. Which I would expect from mythical creatures of the deep!

I think the water looks great. I love the reds and oranges with the blue, and the purple of the mermaids.

Gorgeous work as always! From what I've read, it's good to refuse treasure from pretty much any mythical creature that offers it to you. : P

Hey, I love this piece and your gallery is amazing. It was a really cool choice to use pink-ish hues on that patch of water behind the boat, very unexpected, yet very believable and satisfying! One thing that's bothering me is if you meant the mermaid on the left to have such wide-set hips, or at least it seems that she does.

Thank you! :) And yes, I did intend for her to be a little heavier in the hips. Actually, they all should be a little heavier overall; I'd imagine you'd need the extra layer of insulation to keep you warm in colder ocean waters. :)

> > Sorry to come off snooty, your right, it's your work and you shouldn't change anything (and I didn't mean to sound like I wanted you to). Originally I was just checking if it was intentional, I'm used to seeing mermaids being in tropical locations with model-like bodies. While I like mermaids the more traditional way, I think your change is still very interesting and it's better to break away from what people are used to.

I'm very curious to see what the original water tones were. Don't bend your art to the wants of others, I beg you! Learn from critique and experience, yes, and just because it "doesn't look right" to someone doesn't mean it should change to suit their "tastes" or perceptions.

Yeah, honestly, the more I look at this version, the more I prefer the old one. I think I'm going to keep the colors the way they were and just realize that it's not going to be to every single person's tastes. Here is the original, by the way: [link] I'm going to switch it back in a bit.

This looks gorgeous. I really like your palette, the warm gold of the sea and the crimson-purple of the mermaids. One would expect these to be in cool colours. I like the fresh approach.
